Ada Bojana and Nudism – Welcome to the Island of Freedom
At the southernmost tip of Montenegro, just a few kilometers from Ulcinj, lies Ada Bojana – a unique island that has for decades represented a symbol of untouched natural beauty and freedom. When we say freedom, we mean nudism, which has been present in this place since as far back as 1973, as evidenced by the fact that the nudist resort on Ada Bojana is the only complex of its kind in this part of Europe – and likely beyond.
The island has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and warm summers, making it an attractive destination throughout the entire year. In addition to lovers of hedonism and freedom, Ada Bojana is also one of the favorite destinations for all those in search of peace, inspiration, stunning landscapes, and a piece of nature preserved for centuries.
For all these reasons, in this blog we will take a closer look at everything this small island has to offer – and it truly has a lot. So, let’s begin…
How Did the Nudist Paradise Come to Be?
For those who may not know, until the 1970s, Ada Bojana served as a border zone between the former Yugoslavia and Albania. Due to the nature of diplomatic relations between the two countries, this area was not open to visitors until 1973, when something happened that, just a few years earlier, would have seemed practically impossible.
From Border Zone to Tourist Destination
As we’ve already mentioned, until the 1970s, Ada Bojana was practically inaccessible to “civilians.” Thanks to the normalization of international relations between the two countries, and primarily the meeting between perhaps the most well-known Montenegrin tourism official, Miodrag Mirović, and the Halgat brothers, what we now know as the most popular nudist/naturist location in the Balkans was born.
Thanks to Miodrag’s abilities, and the practical experience and resources of the Halgat brothers from Germany (owners of the “Miramare” company, who, during their first visit to the island, said it was ideal for a nudist resort), building permits were obtained in the early 1970s, and work on the first bungalows began.
The First Bungalows and Early Development
The new accommodation facilities on Ada Bojana – the so-called “bungalows” – quickly attracted naturism/nudism enthusiasts from across Europe, and the camp itself was built to high standards for the time. Its main features were a guaranteed right to privacy and direct access to the beach. For these reasons, Ada Bojana became a center of naturist/nudist tourism – and it remains so to this day.

What Makes Ada Bojana Special?
The answer to this question is very simple. Ada Bojana is a place where natural beauty, unique geographical features, and a culture that may not be typical for our region intertwine in an entirely extraordinary way.
River, Sea, Flora and Fauna
The very location of Ada Bojana is what makes it stand out the most. A triangular shape, not such a large surface area, three kilometers of fine sandy beach, and of course, the ability to swim in both fresh and salt water within just a few minutes. In addition to that, the island is located right on the border between Montenegro and Albania, which makes it a very important strategic point (even though the days of military and border complexes are already half a century behind us).
Also, the Mediterranean vegetation, rich flora and fauna, are just some of the many factors that further highlight the uniqueness of this island. In the Ulcinj lagoon alone, 241 species of birds have been registered, which makes up as much as 50% of the bird species that inhabit Europe. That it’s not just about birds and vegetation is confirmed by the presence of the rare red viper, as well as many other species you won’t have the chance to encounter anywhere else except at this unique place.

Three Kilometers of Beach Exclusively for Naturists
The beach on Ada Bojana, aside from its fine, soft sand, is also known for its length of three kilometers. If we compare it with the Velika Plaža (Long Beach), we’ll realize that Ada’s beach is more than three times smaller, but if we tell you that these three kilometers are intended exclusively for nudists, that will significantly change your perspective.
On the beach itself, clothing is not allowed, and that is something you should know before visiting. However, if you’re unsure whether to go, what we can guarantee is that curious looks and uncomfortable situations do not exist here — which is precisely why this complex has lasted for more than 50 years.
If you do decide to visit, what awaits you are impressive landscapes, long and pleasant walks along the shore, as well as various types of recreational and sports activities the beach offers — yet another reason why you should consider visiting.
Nudism vs. Naturism – Myths, Subtle Differences, and the Truth About the Philosophy
The difference between nudism and naturism often creates confusion among visitors to Ada Bojana. Although the terms are sometimes used as synonyms, there are subtle differences in philosophical and practical understandings, which we’ll try to explain in more detail below.
The Biggest Misconceptions About Nudism
To begin with, it’s only fair to present some of the biggest misconceptions related to the term nudism. The public often assumes that nudists are always motivated by sexuality or some form of provocation — which is absolutely not the case, quite the opposite. Nudist resorts and beaches, including Ada Bojana, strictly prohibit any kind of inappropriate behavior. The rules of such places emphasize the need for mutual respect, privacy, and a ban on photography, and guests are usually made aware of these rules immediately upon arrival (and the more informed ones, even much earlier).

In addition to that, many people believe that nudists want to “stand out” or somehow “separate themselves from society in an extreme way,” which is absolutely untrue. Nudists simply seek freedom, comfort, convenience while sunbathing, and the ability to swim without clothing. Their motivations are more often practical than philosophical, as evidenced by the fact that nudists are most commonly families, couples, or individuals from various generations — and by no means the promiscuous types that most people imagine them to be.
Naturism – Values of a Healthy Life and Synergy With Nature
Unlike nudism, naturism is more focused on a lifestyle — a philosophy related to health, ecological awareness, and the harmony between humans and nature. Precisely for these reasons, Ada Bojana has for years attracted naturists from around the world, as it offers them the opportunity to enjoy an ecologically preserved environment, walks and swimming without clothes, clean sea and river water, as well as recreational activities.
The motivations behind the naturist lifestyle lie in the fact that it includes daily time spent in nature, swimming, and sunbathing without clothes — thereby greatly supporting both physical and mental health. Additionally, naturists often place special value on the sense of community and respect for others, which is equivalent to the respect they feel toward nature.

Rules on Nudist/Naturist Beaches and Resorts That Require Minimal Environmental Impact and Maximum Respect for Privacy:
- Maintaining cleanliness
- Use and promotion of natural materials
- Noise limitations
- Photos and video recordings are strictly prohibited
Precisely for these reasons, Ada Bojana represents both a nudist and naturist paradise, where visitors have the privilege to be who they truly are — without judgment, condemnation, or uncomfortable glances.

In addition to all the above, thanks to the spacious beach, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy numerous beach activities such as football, volleyball, and many others. Gastronomy Based on a Palette of Local Flavors
In addition to the conveniences we’ve already mentioned, Ada Bojana also stands out for its rich gastronomic offerings. Most restaurants specialize in seafood and fish, which are prepared in an entirely authentic way. Local specialties such as sea bass, mullet, scorpionfish, and mussels are an essential part of the island’s cuisine. Freshly caught fish is most often grilled over open flames (“gradele”) in these restaurants, accompanied by garlic, local olive oil, and plenty of Mediterranean herbs.

On the other hand, if you’re in the mood for some refreshment, you’ll have the chance to taste homemade Montenegrin wine and rakija, as well as beverages from some of the world’s most renowned brands. Additionally, it’s very important to know that restaurants on Ada Bojana offer a wide variety of vegan and vegetarian options, so you can relax knowing there’s something for everyone.
A Few Practical Tips for Visitors
Entry to Ada Bojana is free for all pedestrians and cyclists, while motor vehicles are charged by the hour or by the day. Starting from July 1st, the hourly parking fee will be €2, and the daily rate will be €10.
When it comes to accommodation, it’s highly recommended — if possible — to book in advance, especially if you’re planning your vacation in July or August. Also, while the island has all the necessary infrastructure, if you plan to spend time outside the resort area, we suggest bringing along some basic essentials.
Finally, let’s touch on internet access, credit card payments, and transportation. These services are available within the complex, but when leaving the resort, it’s advisable to carry some cash just in case. As for transportation, taxis and local transit options are quite limited (and often expensive) due to the island’s location, so we recommend arriving by your own car or renting a bicycle upon arrival.
